IRS Digital Taxpayer Tools

Description

Led usability and accessibility research to improve trust, clarity, and error prevention across IRS digital tax filing and compliance tools. Findings directly informed redesigned pathways that reduced user errors and supported the agency’s broader digital modernization efforts.

Context

As part of the IRS’s digital modernization efforts, I led usability research to ensure online tax filing and compliance tools were accessible, trustworthy, and usable for a broad and diverse taxpayer population.

What I Did

Conducted moderated usability testing with taxpayers across income levels, ages, and technical proficiencies

Evaluated navigation clarity, trust signals, error prevention, and comprehension of complex tax tasks

Partnered closely with designers and engineers to iteratively test and refine prototypes

Assessed accessibility compliance, including screen reader compatibility and assistive technology use

Outcome

The research directly informed redesigns of critical digital pathways, reducing user errors and increasing confidence in online services. Findings were incorporated into a broader IRS digital transformation roadmap, strengthening both usability and public trust.

If you're navigating a complex decision, stalled adoption, or unclear research findings, I'd be happy to talk.  Short conversations often lead to clarity, even if we don't end up working together.
